    Description

This beautiful and festive poncho is full of complex bands of repeated symbols and geometric zig-sag patterns in Peruvian red and white national colors. Two bold strips of solid black contrast with the detailed patterning. Smaller bands of a bright orange and green add richness to the tapestry palette. The finished edge of the poncho is done in alternating red and white colors from which sprout a full color spectrum fringe. The geometric patterns woven into this poncho and other textiles of Peru often tell complex stories of the interactions between the artisans and their natural environment. Every detail of a textile conveys meaning. Regional preferences for patterns, colors, and symbols give clues as to which a community a person is from.
The Pisac man in the photo is wearing a poncho similar to this one.
Poncho dimensions are 50” x 39”  with 11” head opening bordered by a 3” fringe.
