Description
This striated natural coffee brown aguayo has border designs in national colors of Bolivia, red, yellow and green
. Running through the magenta border stripe is a symbol for a viscacha, an animal similar to a chinchilla, that has been and continues to be a traditional food source. On both sides of the central seam are two red color bands patterned with large and small condors
—o
ne of these birds has a serpent like tail! Notice how the red becomes black on one side and black becomes red on the opposite side.
The patterns and symbols woven into the aguayo record the thoughts and the experiences of the women spinning and weaving the textile to life. Both colors and symbols have meaning and identify a region or community. Textiles in this style are very characteristic of this area and well recognized. Acquired in Sucre, Bolivia in 1966.
Size is 39” x 44-1/2”.
