Vintage Aguayo from Pisac, Peru 1967 (7122)

Description

This strikingly colorful aguayo was acquired on market day in Pisac, Peru in 1967. Peruvians love their bright colors and adore themselves with elaborate hats and spectacular hand made textiles. This aguayo has large solid black areas intersected by colorful symbolic design bands in red, yellow, blue, green, white and black colors. Some symbols are easy to interpret, such as the birds, flowers, others such as the zig-zag lines and x’s are a question.
The
anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, and geometric patterns woven into an aguayo often tell complex stories of the interactions between the artisans and their natural environment. Every detail of a textile conveys meaning. Regional preferences for patterns, colors, and symbols give clues as to which community a person is from. Red and white are the national colors of Peru. One design band has red, yellow, and green the national colors of Bolivia.
Note on the obverse side the colors switch—red and white becomes white and red. Decorative machine stitching surrounds the piece on three sides. One inch weft thread count is 26.
