    Description

One lot of two Yanomami Indian Amazon Rainforest flat utility baskets of all natural materials: one 13 in. diameter x 3 in. deep; other: 10.5 in. diameter x 3 in. deep. Unlikely that either of these baskets had been used.
Beautifully hand-woven by the women of
the Yanomami tribe in the Amazon basin. Woven-fiber gathering baskets, called
    shoto
    (
    xoto
) these are flat baskets used to store
and serve items for daily use. Yanomami baskets are prized for
their quality of workmanship and tight weave—and also for their esthetic abstract motifs seen on the bottom. Each basket is decorated using the black genipapo plant or a masticated
charcoal pigment to paint black dots, waves, lines, or a circular décor. No two basket designs are the same.
The Yanomami are an indigenous people living in the Brazil-Venezuela border region and somewhat under stress with what
is happening right now in ongoing political power struggle in Venezuela.
