Bursera Graveolens mostly known as Palo Santo in Spanish meaning the 'Holy Stick' is a wild tree which grows naturally in South America and which when harvested respectfully and correctly creates a natural wood aromatic incense used for centuries by the indigenous people of South America as a spiritual remedy for purifying and cleansing, as well protection from evil spirits and bad misfortune and which also has several medicinal purposes. Palo Santo is in the same family as the frankincense and myrrh trees and it is often used by traditional shamans in sacred ayahuasca ceremonies. Palo Santo trees naturally live for 80 to 90 years. After a Palo Santo tree dies naturally the tree must remain in its natural habitat for 4 to 10 years to complete its metamorphosis or 'seasoning' after which the wood contains its full medicinal and sacred properties. Palo Santo differs from conventional incense which burns completely after lighting, Palo Santo may be relit many times. When lighting, allow the wood to burn for about a minute, then blow the flame out and use the resulting smoke to smudge.The heartwood of Palo Santo is used in aromatherapy, meditation, smudging for energetic purification of space or self, preparing tea, and as an effective repellent for mosquitoes.
