    Description

This item is a RARE owl-head pestle (pilon) from the Pre-Columbian native-Caribbean Taino-Caribe-Arawak culture, which inhabited the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. It is a Zemi figure, which was a spiritual object. It is carved from hard stone, and is from circa 1200-1500 AD.
    It measures 7.5" H x 4.25" W.
It has been professionally appraised for it's authenticity and value. All appraisal documents will be included with the pestle (see pictures for details). This item would make an excellent addition to a museum or private collection. A very similar pestle is in the collection of the University of Notre Dame's Snite Museum of Art
    More information from the appraisal:
Condition: Overall Good. Minor chips to upper extremities -rim chip re-glued. Wax soiling in one eye.
Provenance: Found in East Florida along the coast. A surface find, partially exposed, not necessarily archeological but "local."
Comments: An effigy pestle from the Taino-Caribe-Arawak complex of the pre-contact Caribbean. Compare this example to a more elaborate two faced pestle (pilon) in
    L'art Taino
. Note similar raised element above base. The appraised example is a bit more crudely carved with some condition issues. It is, nonetheless, a rare example of a rare form.
It would be extremely difficult to find another example.
