    What is 5-HTP?
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that occurs naturally in the human body. Its primary use in the human body is as a precursor in the conversion of tryptophan into the neurotransmitters melatonin and serotonin. 5-HTP is available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement in several countries, including the United States. It is also available in European countries under trade names such as Cincofarm, Levotonine, Levothym, Oxyfan, Triptum, Telesol and Tript-OH. 5-HTP (Oxitriptan) is a naturally occurring amino acid that makes serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, responsible for mood, sleep, and appetite. Therefore, when people take 5-HTP, they ultimately boost serotonin levels. You will commonly find this amino acid in nootropic stacks, allowing users to decrease stress levels and enhance mood. If you have stimulating nootropics in your stack, then this is a great addition for balancing everything out. Due to its role in the breakdown of tryptophan (which produces serotonin and melatonin), it is highly efficient regarding appetite suppression and improved mood. Although some individuals take tryptophan supplements for this purpose, taking 5-HTP eliminates one of the metabolic steps, making it more potent. Since 5-HTP is an important step between tryptophan and serotonin, its history started with L-tryptophan. When released in the 1980s, there were issues linked to the use of L-tryptophan. It was not tryptophan itself that made people sick, it was the impurities that occurred during its manufacturing. When looking for alternatives, 5-HTP was released in 1994. It was believed to yield less risk in terms of contamination than tryptophan. It is now being used as a more natural alternative to other prescription drugs. It is used for a variety of conditions, making it a well-rounded supplement.
    How Does 5-HTP Work?
Once taken, 5-HTP is broken within the liver, where it’s then transported to the blood-brain barrier. After 5-HTP reaches the brain, it is converted into serotonin. This is so much more effective than taking serotonin, because serotonin cannot cross the blood-brain barrier like 5-HTP can. 5-HTP is a direct precursor to serotonin, while serotonin is a precursor to melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone that’s responsible for sleeping. It helps to control your sleep and wake cycles. So, some of the 5-HTP you take, will eventually become this sleep hormone.
When both melatonin and serotonin levels increase, you will experience, higher levels of relaxation, greater sense of well-being, and you will sleep better at night. This is why 5-HTP is ideal in a stack, as it can make users feel relaxed, while they increase cognitive functioning.
    Main Benefits Of 5-HTP:
    Low Mood:
The most commonly prescribed antidepressant drugs, SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) work by raising levels of serotonin in the brain, but rather than increasing its synthesis, they block its re-uptake so that levels within the communication gaps between brain cells increase. If you are making very little serotonin, however, SSRIs may not produce a significant response, or may do so only slowly. As 5-HTP helps to boost production of serotonin in the brain, it tends to have a faster onset of action than prescription-only SSRI anti-depressant drugs. Because of its mode of action, it often produces good results in people who have not previously responded to standard SSRI antidepressant drugs. Several placebo-controlled analyses have shown that 5-HTP supplements have a positive effect on low mood and are better than placebo at alleviating depression and helping you feel more calm and content. N.B. 5-HTP should not be taken at the same time as prescription anti-depressant drugs.
    Headache:
5-HTP has been used to help prevent chronic daily headache. Boosting serotonin production promotes vaso-constriction in the brain to relieve migraine headaches linked with vasodilation. 5-HTP is thought to increase pain thresholds by raising levels of endorphins the brain’s morphine-like painkillers.
    Sleep:
5-HTP is used to help treat insomnia. It improves the architecture of sleep, so you wake up feeling more refreshed. It extends the period of time spent in REM (rapid eye movement, or dreaming) sleep and is involved in the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. It is especially helpful for people with a condition known as fibromyalgia, in which widespread pains, fatigue and sleep disturbance have been linked with low levels of serotonin. 5-HTP has also been used successfully to treat sleep terrors’ in young children.
    Appetite:
Raised levels of serotonin help to trigger feelings of satiety, so you feel more full, less hungry and have a decreased interest in food. This may make it helpful for people with a binge-eating disorder.
