  • Condition: Overall condition shows wear, second and third generation repair work, and tears. The edging is frayed in places, and in the dark brown area there is repair work. This aguayo is offered in the state it was acquired. Any defects not mentioned, but are visible in the photos, are considered as described. Background Note: This is a traditional hand woven aquayo from Bolivia. An aguayo is a utilitarian carrying cloth, or tapestry, woven by women and used to carry babies on her back, food to eat, and transport all sorts of personal items. Woven textiles or tapestries such as this have been a feature of Bolivian life and culture for thousands of years. While most aguayos are utilitarian, some were made especially for ceremonial use, and considered by native people to be of great value.

    Description

    This beautiful and outstanding traditional Armara aguayo is dominated by a dark coffee brown weave with intricate geometric patterns and stripes in deep indigo, burgundy, and white along the center seam and on the sides. The edging around the entire piece is black with a red and white eye-like pattern. A narrow green, white, and red (Bolivian national colors) stripe follows along side the edging in the same direction as the other stripes. Within the four broad stripes is a complicated and finely woven design pattern containing two lines resembling double dashes, alternating green and white, and another stripe of red and indigo upon which is a repeating abstract symbol in white. All colors appear to be from natural dyes. The intricacy and the fineness of the weaving is a marvel. In the hand, this aguayo has a luxurious, supple, and polished feel. Weft thread count is an amazing 42 threads per inch. It was acquired in Cochabamba, Bolivia in 1967.
