Description
Brazil, Waiãmpi / Oiampi Indian Leg Rattles, Tribal, Amapá, 1992Up for offer is a set of leg rattles from the Waiãpi (Oiampi) tribe in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil. This rattle is made from a 29-inch-long (74cm) woven cotton strip that is approximately 3 inches (7.5cm) wide, with nut shells hanging from the bottom to produce sound. I do not know what kind of nut shells these are. The length also does not include the cord for tying the rattles in place around the leg.
The Waiãmpi are a small tribe in northern Brazil and French Guyana. I was given this rattle in 1992 by a Brazlian anthropologist who had worked with the tribe in Amapá. At that time, there were about 500 Waiãmpi in Brazil and another 400 in French Guyana.
