Mapuche "Kollón" mask
Ceremonial piece.
Metal mask on which the passage of time has given a particular patina. The kollón is used by a masked character called "
curiche
" in charge of opening the way for the "
Machi
" and maintaining order during ceremonies to enforce the ritual, such as delimiting the sacred space during the "
nguillatún
".
Mask made entirely of a consistent sheet of metal. Made in Alpaca metal (
German silver
). It has an oval and pointed facial structure, with severe and schematic features, resulting in a piece with an exquisite archaic air and at the same time elegant and sober craftsmanship.
The set is executed through the use of various techniques, such as a uniform hammered plate, an embossing technique to give volume to the forehead and the nasal septum, and at the same time, openwork for the eye holes and mouth. The application of striking hanging rings in the shape of a traditional "
Sekil
" constitutes the decorative element that adorns and finishes off the object.
