Antique Weighted Rosewood Netting Box/CushionEnglish * Circa 1820
This unusual piece is made of gorgeously grained rosewood decorated all around with faceted steel studs (clouté). It is heavily weighted with lead and was made to be a foundation to create a piece of netted lace. A weighted pillow or a netting hook on a table clamp could also be used for this purpose. The pincushion on top would be used to secure the beginning of the netting so that both hands would be free to work (see drawing).
The front has a little drawer that contains pins, some netting tools and a small pair of steel scissors.
The scissors are 2 1/2" long. The blades are tight with sharp points and they cut well to the tips.
The pincushion is original and is made of a heavy corded fabric. It's
frayed in spots but is pretty much intact.
The condition of the box is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. The little drawer slides perfectly and the patina of the wood is lovely. The base measures 4" x 4" and it's about 3" high. It weighs a very solid 2 pounds and 9 ounces. It would also make a great frame weight if you do canvas work.
I stand behind everything that I offer and
guarantee
that it is exactly as presented.
